55: People say that they talk to God. What does that mean exactly?

“I’m often perplexed when religious people say that they talk to God. What does that mean exactly? Could they just really be talking to themselves...or if they really are talking to God...does He tell ppl different truths? Hope you can answer :-)”

I can’t really say what everyone means when they say that they talk to God. At the same time, I would say that we all have the right, and the capacity, to talk to God/ the Universe! You ask if they could just be talking to themselves, and the answer to that is yes. We all need to remember that every time we use the word ‘God’ to identify it with ourselves, not as something separate. This will probably take a conscious effort but you will begin to feel different right away. That said, talking to your self IS talking to God. You don’t need another entity to have a relationship with God. In fact, I believe our direct relationship with God is personal and though it we can personally connect with each other.

Even though I say that, I think you want to know if God speaks back, and if so, does God tell different people different truths. The first part is, does God speak back? Yes, God always speaks back but we don’t always hear! When someone is speaking to God they are not listening to God (nirvana is an exception to this because there is no time in between question and response). That is one of the ideas behind meditation. The more ‘quiet’ that we can become, the better we are able to listen. I’m in no position to be able to judge how well another person can listen to God, than anyone is in judging anything that I’ve learned from my journey. In that way, this question applies to me as well. The second part is, does God tell different people different truths? Yes, because the truth is like a tree that has one seed but different expressions. They all lead to the same place but we may need to follow different paths there. The branches are not lies they are truths to greater truth.

At the end of the day no matter what someone says, no matter where they say it came from, it’s up to you to determine whether or not it is true. I believe that when someone ‘hears’ the truth, they know it. If there is something you question, I suggested meditating on it. Think about the question then let it go. Allow thoughts to flow in and out of your mind without analysis. When you are done, think about what feels right. The universe unveils its self to us all at our own pace. The truths that you are ready to understand will be put before you, grasp them out of free will, and travel deeper :-)
